The 6-foot-7 Devance has played under Cone since their days at Alaska, where their partnership produced a league title in the 2010 Fiesta Conference.
When the American coach moved over to handle B-Meg (now Star), the left-handed Fil-American followed suit and together, they won five PBA crowns, including the coveted Grand Slam in the 2014 season.
That’s why Devance completely understands why Cone left the team in haste, just shortly after Ginebra blew a big lead in the fourth quarter and eventually losing Game 1 of the Governors Cup Finals, 114-109 in overtime on Friday.
“He (Cone) really did, he was upset. He shouldn’t have to be like that. It should have come within us,” said Devance on Cone.
The multi-titled PBA was so disappointed with Ginebra’s fourtj quarter performance that he didn’t even bother to enter the press room for his post-game interview.
Devance said it is obviously disappointing to see the Kings play without their usual energy and fire, qualities that helped them dethrone San Miguel Beer in their semifinal duel last week.
“Honestly, it was not about Xs and Os, it was something about heart we kinda lacked, we letup,” he said.
While the Kings are favored in the best-of-seven title series, the top PBA Rookie pick in 2007 said they didn’t put up a decent fight, but were instead outplayed and outhustled by the Bolts.
“We laid down, we gave them the game. They worked for it, they deserved to win. It’s all hustle and all heart for them, if we don’t match it, we’re not gonna play in this series,” he added.
Ginebra tries to bounce back and even the series at 1-1 when it clashes anew with Meralco on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
