Scoreless in the first three quarters, Amer electrified the Bolts with seven straight points inside the last two minutes as Meralco turned back pesky sister team NLEX, 101-95 on Wednesday.
Coming in as a substituted for big man Kelly Nabong, who fouled out, the former San Beda Red Lion stalwart started his late-game outburst with a pair of free throws, before drilling a dagger three in the left corner off a pass from import Allen Durham.
Amer capped off his heroics with another jumper that practically sealed the Meralco’s fourth win, drawing a huge smile on the face of Alapag.
“Absolutely,” answered Alapag. “That’s part of my role here, to do what I can on the court, to help the team win, but at the same time, do my best to help mentor Baser.”
Sitting out due to calf tightness, the former Gilas captain temporarily joined the coaching staff in civilian uniform as he was seen cheering for Amer from the bench.
Before Amer’s heroics, he was 0-of-6 from the floor.
“There’s more to come this conference for the rest of his (Amer’s) career,” assured 38-year old guard, who is expected to be back in their next game.
Amer, on the other hand, credited Alapag’s challenge on him as he stepped up big at the right time.
“Nung hindi ako maka-shoot nung una, sinabi lang niya sa akin just keep on shooting. So naging ready lang din ako. Dapat talaga mag-double effort ako,” said the Davao native baller, who also added four rebounds and four assists.
