Cardona is reportedly at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the University of Perpetual Help Hospital in Las Piñas after his vital signs started to stabilize.
In a DZMM report, Cardona’s sister Rowena said in an interview that the 34-year old PBA player hinted on committing suicide in their last conversation.
“Ang huling nasabi lang po niya sa akin, ‘Ate hindi ko na kaya.’ Nagpapaalam siya… Nararamdaman ko na may balak siyang gawin sa sarili niya,” Cardona’s sister said in an interview on DZMM.
This was supported by a photo posted by Cardona himself in his Instagram account on Saturday night.
Following a stellar career in college where he won 2 UAAP championships with La Salle, Cardona was selected fifth overall in the 2005 PBA Draft. The peak of his PBA success came with Talk n Text in the 2008-09 PBA Philippine Cup in which he won his first and only league title and was named Finals MVP.
Known for his tear-drop and moniker Captain Hook, Cardona was one of the best players in the league before the turn of the decade but had since bounce from TNT to sister team Meralco and Air21, which was subsequently bought by his current team, NLEX.
Cardona has been on the reserve list of the Road Warriors and has yet to see action this conference. While the cause of his suicide attempt remains sketchy, the DZMM report also revealed that Cardona was arrested for a domestic violence.
NLEX team manager Ronald Dulatre said that the Road Warriors will release a statement soon regarding the incident.
